IWG Chapter Challenge

 

Each year, the Irish Woodturners Guild challenges its members to make a specific item for judging at its annual conference. The item has to be made entirely from wood. The competition was initiated in 2008, and below are details of the Southeast Chapters involvement.

2008 challenge was was the Nesting Boxes Competition and the brief was that your biggest box was to be 10” high and 5” in diameter. After that, it was up to you to see how many you could make to fit into each other; just like Russian Dolls.”

 

The Southeast entry comprising of 35 boxes, all made by Paddy Murphy, was the winner.

2009 challenge was to make the four lightest apples of a predetermined size from any native fruit wood.

The Southeast entry at 78 grams was the winner.

 

 

2010 challenge was to fit as many 15 cm high candle sticks with 15 cm X 22 mm candles on a half A4 size template. The Southeast entry was designed by Tom Larkin and made by Paddy Murphy, PJ Ryan, Liam Kirwan, Gabriel Wall, Tom Larkin and Padraigh Phelan

The Southeast entry of 56 candles was the winner

 

 

 

2011 challenge was to make a breakfast and serve on a room service tray supplied by the Malton Hotel (seminar venue 2011)

17 Southeast chapter members took up the challenge and in a close competition, their entry was declared the winner

2014 challenge was to make a traction engine completely from wood.

15 members took up the challenge and their entry was declared the winner

PJ Ryan, Tom Dunlop, Brendan Hogg, Tom Larkin, Ivor McGoff, John Flynn, Liam Kirwan, Padraig Phelan, Paddy Myrphy, Ciaran Walsh, Gabriel Wall, Bernie Kirwan, Willie Walsh, Niall O'Neill and George Wills all contributed.

The 2015 challenge was to make an all wooden bicycle. 14 of our members took up the challenge and their entry was declared the winner.

PJ Ryan, Tom Dunlop, Brendan Hogg, Tom Larkin, Ivor McGoff, John Flynn, Liam Kirwan, Padraig Phelan, Paddy Myrphy, Ciaran Walsh, Ciaran McCarthy, Gabriel Wall, Bernie Kirwan and Pat Dowling formed the team
